Scholarships & Awards

The MGHNAA is pleased to make available the following awards and scholarships to support current nursing students and graduates of the MGH Institute for Health Professions School of Nursing (MGH IHP SON).  Awards and Scholarships are made possible by the generosity of members of the MGHNAA and other donors. 

For Current MGH IHP SON Students

All Scholarships and Awards are selected by IHP faculty.

 

Mary Caira Award - $5,000

 

Criteria:

  • Candidate in the Master’s Degree in Nursing Program in good academic standing, having completed the Generalist Program in the MGH Institute for Health Professions School of Nursing, actively engaged in the educational process while concurrently employed

  • Professional nursing student whose clinical proficiency, leadership, education and mentoring skills demonstrate a dedication to quality patient and family care

  • Professional nursing student whose dedication to advancing professional practice includes a commitment to serve in organized professional groups and associations whose mission is to advance, support, and lead professional nursing practice and the individuals likewise committed

Adele Corkum Award - $5,000

 

Criteria:

  • Student who has completed the Generalist portion of the MGH IHP SON Direct Entry Nursing (DEN) Program

  • Student who represents the qualities of Adele Corkum – admirable, diligent, extraordinary, loyal, energetic, loving, caring, outstanding, kind, and understanding

Miriam Huggard Scholarship - $5,000

 

Criteria:

  • A student who is placed at the MGH in the Role Immersion/Clinical Elective course in the final semester of the program

  • Demonstration of exemplary clinical skills during the first three semesters of the program.

  • Embodiment of the core values that made Miriam Huggard an exceptional nurse, leader, and mentor – including but not limited to integrity, dedication, volunteerism, innovation, and compassion toward patients and colleague nurses.

Ruth Sleeper Award - $5,000

 

Criteria:

  • Student who has completed the generalist portion of the MGH IHP SON DEN program who best exemplifies “excellence in both the theory and practice of nursing”

  • First criteria are the academic record of the student, and then the recommendation of the faculty on the ability of the student to transfer the academic information to excellence in clinical practice.

Lloyd Nichols Staats Scholarship - $5,000

 

Criteria:

  • Student in the Accelerated BSN Program at the MGH IHP SON.

  • Student in good standing as determined by the MGH IHP SON faculty.

Student Paper - $1,000

 

Criteria:

  • Recognition of an outstanding student paper.  A paper submitted for a course or something written specifically for the award are all to be considered.

  • Standard academic format as recommended by the MGH IHP SON.

  • Length flexible, include cover page and references per standard academic format.

  • Review Criteria:

    • Originality of the idea presented

    • Writing style

    • Comprehensiveness and delivery

    • Academic rigor

    • Topic pertinent to the role of nursing in healthcare or to a key nursing role in the provision of healthcare
